About Phil Ashcroft

Phil Ashcroft is a painter and graphic artist based at Thames-Side Studios.

Combining influences from abstract expressionism, British landscape painting, Japanese woodcuts, and graphic street art, Ashcroft integrates varied styles to present a vision of environmental, financial and political threat, creating a world of semi-surreal settings, cartoon-like motifs and the detritus of the modernist ideals of the past.

Ashcroft was a finalist in the John Moores Painting Prize 2014, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2014), finalist in the Celeste Art Prize 2007 and selected for Contemporary Art Society’s ARTfutures 2007 and 2005, Bloomberg SPACE, London. Works are held in public and private collections worldwide including Aedas Architects, New Art Gallery Walsall, Royal Mail and Sony Archive.

Commissions include projects for Aedas Architects, Amnesty International (UK), British Film Institute, Levis, Nike Town, Yahoo (UK). Ashcroft also exhibits as ‘PhlAsh’ collaborating on live-painting projects in galleries and alternative spaces from street locations to shops. His first book Solar System Parameters containing work from 2005-2013 and an essay by Paul Hobson, director Modern Art Oxford, was published by Gamma Proforma in 2013.
